Shane Claiborne at Hesston College

Today I attended the Anabaptist Vision and Discipleship Series at Hesston Collge.  The speaker was Shane Claiborne.  I have heard him speak a couple of times before. Below are a few of my favorite quotes from today:

The Christian faith spreads best not through force but through fascination.

The commuter church makes community really difficult.

We have a God who is loving people back to life. We often forget the power of God's grace to bring people back to life.

Grace is endangered.

We need to create a new culture in the church. We need to admit we're not perfect. World is not looking for perfection but honesty.

God works through the cracks. God works through our imperfections.

As unchurched and unbelievers describe the God they don't believe in, I realize I don't believe in that God either.

Some of the loudest voices have not been the most beautiful.

The answer to bad theology is good theology not no theology.

We can misplace our hope in politics and candidates. We should have suspicion towards messianic hope in anyone/anything other than Jesus.

Laws don't change people's hearts.

If our programs outgrow our relationships, we have to squelch the programs in favor of relationships.

It's very fashionable to talk about the poor. It's not very fashionable to talk to them. Mother Theresa

Rarely do I know someone who has been "argued" into a new reality. It comes through relationship.

It takes a lot of faith to trust the Holy Spirit to convict.

Have you earned the right to speak into someone's life?

One thing liberals and conservatives have in common is they have lost their joy.

Don't get overwhelmed by the darkness. Remember the hope. We know how the story ends.

We have a discipleship problem. Evangelism has caused us to make believers not disciples, but discipleship is more holistic.

Stay focused on Jesus. Be reminded of love of Jesus.
